University Twente

The Chair Integrated Optical MicroSystems (IOMS), formerly known as the Lightwave Devices Group (LDG), is part of the faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS)   (Elektrotechniek, Wiskunde en Informatica (EWI)  in Dutch)  at the University of Twente . The research activities are carried out within the MESA+ Research Institute .

Research Themes Research within the IOMS chair is organized in three research groups:

· Active Photonic Devices (Prof. M. Pollnau)

· Photonics Integration Technology (Prof. A. Driessen)

· Sensors and Photonic Crystals (Dr. H.J.W.M. Hoekstra)

The research activities of the Integrated Optical MicroSystems group concentrate on design, realization and testing of planar integrated optical devices, and on materials connected herewith. The main application fields are optical communications and optical sensors.

Sensors and Photonic Crystals

The IOMS group focuses, besides devices for the telecom, on IO sensors for the chemical domain and also for the read out of moving parts in micromechanical devices. So far, a large number of different sensing principles have been proposed and, for an important part, implemented and tested. In almost all cases the sensors have been developed in cooperation with groups supplying the materials for sensing purposes.

It is the aim for the near future to continue research in line with the above. New challenging sensing topics have to be formulated which have to be interesting both from the scientific and application point of view. Such topics will or could be:

· The further increase of sensitivity of an IO device, down to single molecule detection.

· The application of multi-sensing arrays or matrices, allowing the simultaneous detection of a large number of substances.

·IO devices to study in detail the behaviour of a single molecule (reaction kinetics, (luminescent) behaviour as a function of history).

New principles for position sensing in MEMS devices.

In the light of the above it can be seen that cooperation with scientific partners focusing mainly on the study of a certain class of materials or on MEMS would strengthen the research of the IOMS group, and could also be a source of formulating new, challenging problems in the sensing field.
